    1. This mural (like the others posted so far) was created as part of the local ‘Shine Festival’ and I don’t really have any special insight into their meaning. It is probably safe to say, however, that some are making artistic statements and none are related to the function of the building behind the wall.

      If I were to hazard a guess I would think the muzzle next to a black girl suggests a voice that has been silenced. Notice that the details of the dog’s face are inchoate, yet to emerge, and the girl’s face is bland if not downtrodden, perhaps suggesting a lack of clear identity.

      I’m also reminded of a Langston Hughes poem:

      What happens to a dream deferred?
      Does it dry up
      Like a raisin in the sun?
      Or fester like a sore–
      And then run?
      Does it stink like rotten meat?
      Or crust and sugar over–
      like a syrupy sweet?
      Maybe it just sags
      like a heavy load.
      Or does it explode?
